+===== Outline =====
+Generative AI has burst into prominence as a way of creating images, text and other content during the lifetime of Orion Sphere LRP. GenAI promises that players and LRP organisers could vastly increase the amount of in-character “stuff”, from written documents, filler background stories, ambient soundscapes or images and video tailored to the game setting. If deployed correctly, this could allow for a small team to create a much more immersive and deep setting than would be possible through previous means. However, there are also many significant concerns regarding its use.
+Most of the issues and concerns around the use of AI centre on Large Language Models and Generative Art Models - and these are typically what is referred to as AI in the media and public discourse. In the specialist realm, the blanket term “AI” can refer to many other technologies that are not at issue - machine learning, behaviour modelling and many other technologies. At the same time, AI technologies are evolving fast, and issues with models may change, appear or reduce as they develop. As such, this policy does not apply to specific types of model used, but rather by general principles that can be broadly applied to any activities involving AI technologies.
+At OSLRP, our policy on GenAI is focused on two primary pillars - copyright ethics and environmental concerns. Prominent Large Language Models such as ChatGPT and Generative Art Models such as Midjourney ingest vast quantities of material scraped from the internet to train their models - very little of which they have permission or license to do so. They then remix fragments or stylistic elements of that material to produce content in response to specific prompts, with no attention paid to the originator of the content and their intent. This has serious ethical implications, and is a major concern for creatives seeking payment or acknowledgement for their work. We strongly encourage our attendees not to produce works for Orion Sphere LRP using GenAI models that are trained on copyrighted material harvested without permission or license. +It is important to note that individuals reserve the right to their own image and voice. Creating GenAI images, videos and voice recordings of another attendee without their explicit permission to do so is not permitted at OSLRP under any circumstances, and may result in sanctions including a permanent ban from future OSLRP events.
+Some GenAI models, such as those certified by [[https://www.fairlytrained.org/]], or in-house models trained on company data, do not use copyrighted works without permission in their training data. Others may emerge in the future that use historical or public domain works that are out of copyright. If you do decide to use GenAI to generate material that you bring to events, we encourage you to use one of these models instead of models that are trained using copyrighted material without permission. As demonstrated in the case of the [[Free Union Look & Feel]], fashions in the OSVerse in the current era reflect a hodge-podge of 19th and early 20th Century styles, so content reflecting the style of these periods may fit within certain parts of the setting.
+Currently, large GenAI programs use significant amounts of energy and water to run the datacentres in which they are housed, resulting in knock-on effects such as CO2 emissions and increased energy prices for local communities. We recognise that this is a major issue with their use in comparison with conventional methods. However, the recent release of the DeepSeek model shows that technological improvements and increases in efficiency are likely to reduce the environmental impact of training and running models over time. In order to lessen OSLRP’s environmental impact as a whole, we would encourage attendees who decide to use GenAI to use smaller, more efficient programs/models instead of larger, more damaging ones.
+===== Use of GenAI Content at & by OSLRP =====
+  * OSLRP may use GenAI to create content that we use at events or in our online spaces. If we do so it will be subject to the following restrictions:
+    * We will avoid using any GenAI models that are trained on copyrighted works, and preferably use models trained purely on our own material and content.
+    * Content created by GenAI should be a background or “filler” element, and should not be used to communicate information that is important to plot or character interaction.
+    * Content created using GenAI will be marked as such (see below)
+  * Use of the GenAI Content Mark
+    * Visual content manufactured by GenAI will bear the GenAI Mark so that it is easily noticeable by someone looking at it.
+    * In media where the content is a mix of AI-manufactured and human-created work in separate sections but on the same page, the human-created and AI-manufactured sections will be separated by a visible line and the AI-manufactured sections marked with the GenAI mark.
+    * Audio content will contain the words “GenAI” in a noticeable fashion within the first 5 seconds of the recording.
+    * Video content will have the GenAI mark as a visible watermark for the entire duration of the manufactured portion of the clip.
+  * We strongly encourage all of our attendees who use GenAI-manufactured content at events or in our online spaces to identify it in a similar manner where possible.

+Content produced by GenAI technologies such as LLMs is prone to errors, artefacts and incongruous elements that do not fit in with the setting, as it does not possess any actual understanding of the OSVerse (or indeed of anything). In a vast galaxy teeming with characters, cultures and creators of all sorts, inconsistencies or fanciful mistruths will be common in background material. Player characters, on the other hand, are the focus of the game, and these inconsistencies are likely to damage immersion when they present this flat, incongruous content as their creations. Player Characters should not present GenAI content as their own creative work.
+As the technology improves, training GenAI models is likely to become more available to small institutions. Should we create an in-house GenAI model for the creation of OSLRP background content, it will be trained exclusively on our own material - website content, background and setting material, and plot documents from prior events. Any Gen-AI material used at events and on our social media channels will be marked with the GenAI Mark.
+The subject of AI-powered tools within popular software or platforms such as Photoshop or Github present a more complex situation, as these tools are ostensibly trained on the respective companies’ stock image archives or public codebases hosted on their own services. This policy allows the use of procedural AI-powered tools within digital image software, coding & programming environments, or similar services, as long as the majority of the completed work is not AI-manufactured. Similarly, it is acceptable to use proofreading and editing tools powered by AI to assist in the production of written material, especially as an accessibility aid. Use of AI-powered tools in this manner is not considered to be GenAI content and does not mandate use of the GenAI mark. However, we ask that users of this type of software be aware of their Generative AI policies, and any changes they make to those policies over time.
+===== Use of OSLRP Material =====
+We do not permit any material published on our website to be ingested into an AI model without prior permission. Use of the OSLRP setting or other copyrightable content for any commercial works requires a licensing agreement with us. This includes any content on our website, databases, plot & background documents, game materials, or any other medium issued or created by OSLRP.
+Our players and attendees may freely remix and use our material for their own, non-AI works for use within the game. If an OSLRP attendee wishes to use OSLRP material as part of a GenAI training model, they must contact us first to agree acceptable terms. Photographs taken at our events remain the copyright of their original photographer and permission must be obtained separately to use their images for any purpose - we use photographs on our website and other materials with the permission of the photographer.

+This policy extends to OSLRP Main Events and Sanctioned Events, as well as to any of our Social Media channels - our Facebook Page and Groups, Discord Server, as well as any other channels set up by OSLRP. When posting content to our social media channels, attendees should try and avoid using GenAI images found on the internet, as almost all of these will have been manufactured using non-ethical models.
+==== Reporting use of GenAI Content ====
+While GenAI material often has telltale signs, it is not always easy to tell whether something is manufactured by GenAI or produced in a certain style that is commonly copied by GenAI. If you suspect that someone is using inappropriate GenAI-manufactured work, or presenting a GenAI work in an inappropriate fashion, then let a Referee or member of the [[Game Team]] know and when possible we will investigate the matter, although please be mindful that we are a small team and may not have the resources to follow up on every complaint.
+It is not appropriate to publicly interrogate or accuse another person of using GenAI material. Please be civil in any discussions you might have about GenAI at OSLRP events and in our online spaces. We reserve the right to suspend, restrict or ban people from our social media spaces where conversation has become uncivil.
